Do bunnies sleep?

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Every morning, my bunnies will usually wake up before me. In fact, they can sleep much later than me at night, despite me rushing my projects till perhaps 3am in the morning. This brings us to the question, "Do bunnies sleep?". If yes, when do they actually sleep?

Actually, bunnies sleep mainly in the day - amidst the hot and sunny afternoon weather. Perhaps this is why i hardly see them sleep, especially when i am away in school during the day. Its only during the weekends, where i may still be able to catch a glimpse of them sleeping. Why is this so?

According to research, domestic bunnies often take the characteristics of wild rabbits. This means that they sleep during the day and late at night. But of course, there are bunnies who sleep based on the availability of their owners. If their owners are around from 4pm till bedtime, the bunnies will be awake. However, if their owners are available all day, their bunnies will sleep in the night.

Now that we understand the sleeping times of bunnies, how can we tell that they are sleeping?

Different bunnies have different ways of sleeping. My older bunny, Cutie is usually quite alert - he does not seem to get any heavy sleep. Sometimes, i could not even be sure if he is sleeping. My other bunny, Sweetie, can sleep in a super relaxed manner such that she does not care about her sleeping position - it can be simply anything, from lying on her stomach to lying on her back or even a curled-up posture (as long as it is comfortable). This can be really adorable at times.

So, how does your bunny actually sleep? Feel free to share your views! And if you are interested in knowing more about bunnies, do take a look at Fuzzy Rabbit. Over here, different bunny behaviours are being explained, and it certainly provides great insights to what bunnies are telling you.

Love, joy and bunnies!
