Bonding your Bunnies
Monday, November 30, 2009
Being sociable animals, bunnies are just like humans. They enjoy love and friendship. If you have a single bunny, you definitely need to spend as much time as possible with your bunny, or else they will be lonely.
However, during the day, most of us are probably at work or in school. Many bunny owners thus try to introduce another bunny into the house so that both bunnies can enjoy each other's company. This same situation happened to me as well. After Cutie has been with me for one year, I was afraid that he might be bored and lonely while I was away in school. Imagine yourself facing the four corners of the wall every day. That's definitely boring!

Then, during the holidays, I happened to be reading through a forum post at
SG Club forums (Singapore Online Community) and chanced upon the opportunity to adopt a baby bunny. This baby bunny is now my other pet bunny, Sweetie (white rabbit).
After adopting her, another problem was faced. How can I bond them together? It might be seemingly easy, but there is also the risk of having unsuccessful bonding. Hence, I placed their cages facing each other as a starting point for the bunny bonding session.
It first started out with Sweetie being engrossed with her food and ignoring my other bunny's presence.

Only after lunch, she then started putting her face through the cage and looked at my other bunny.

With both bunnies being unfamiliar to each other, they stood still and looked at each other. Or was that a stare?

Finally, both of them came closer and got to know each other better.

After around one week, I let both of them out and they bonded really well!
To conclude, bunny bonding is important especially when you have more than one bunny. Without bunny bonding, there might be hostility between the bunnies as both of them are not tolerant of one another and demand for your attention.
There are many useful bunny guides that provide a better insight into bunny bonding. A detailed bunny bonding guide is featured in
House Rabbit Network. In this bunny guide, the author has provided a step-by-step explanation of what you can do to bond your bunnies. It was a helpful guide that I have used while bonding my own bunnies and I strongly recommend it to all of you.
On a side note, however, I feel that the bunny guide might be easier to read if there are illustrations used. As the saying goes, pictures speak more than a thousand words. It will be much easier to follow if there are more pictures in the bunny guide.

Everything you ought to know about litter training
Saturday, November 28, 2009
It is essential to litter train your bunny, especially from young. This will ensure a hygienic environment for your bunny to live in. At the same time, you will also benefit from the reduced hassle in cleaning up their cages.
Personally, I feel that it is easy to litter train bunnies. It did not take much effort for me to train all my bunnies.
Firstly, bunnies have the natural tendency to pick a spot and urinate or leave their droppings there. You can start the litter training process by placing newspapers in the cage and observing your bunny's behaviour for a few days.
After you have identified its favourite spot, you can put a litter box at that exact same location. However, this is not enough. You will also need to put newspapers or organic litter in the litter box itself. This will help to absorb the urine and smell.
Basically, the above-mentioned tips help to build the basis for litter training your bunny. The success of the litter training lies in your bunny itself. Young bunnies might not have perfect litter habits all the time, hence it is important to be patient at all times. Your patience will definitely be well-rewarded when your bunny eventually becomes litter trained.

In addition to what I have mentioned earlier, you may also wish to check out the section on litter training at
House Rabbit Society. This is a useful website which has provided answers to a list of questions that you may ask about litter training. On the other hand, if you would like to have a step-by-step guide on how to litter train your bunny, it will be particularly useful to check out
Binky Bunny. This website provides a comprehensive guide to litter training. On top of that, it is also easy to read because they have used pictures to reinforce the information provided.

Do-It-Yourself Bunny Toys
Wednesday, November 25, 2009

As mentioned in the previous posts, do-it-yourself toys are a great way to keep your bunny entertained, while keeping costs low. I have also discussed about the cardboard castle that was mentioned in one of the websites.
What are some other ways that you can create such toys?
Firstly, I feel that toilet roll tubes are the best do-it-yourself toys. In one of my earlier posts, I have said to try out the '
Roll-in-Hay' toy which allows bunnies to entertain themselves with the toilet roll tubes and enjoy eating hay at the same time.
Rating: 9/10
The Roll-in-Hay is effective as my bunny, Sweetie, had enjoyed playing with the tube. She tossed the tube around, chewed on it and rolled it from one point to another, while trying to get a taste of the hay. It was indeed an entertaining toy for bunnies.
Apart from the 'Roll-in-Hay', I have created another version of a 'do-it-yourself' toy for bunnies. My idea was largely inspired by the metal hay ball available at pet stores. This metal hay ball allows you to fill it with hay and hang it at the top of your bunny cage. Its purpose is also relatively similar to the 'Roll-in-Hay' as it incorporates both food and entertainment.
By combining the idea from the metal hay ball, as well as the Roll-in-Hay, this is what you get:
In order to create this toy, I have used a toilet roll tube, a chain (from one of my accessories), and aluminum foil.
I have filmed this video of my bunny as he evaluates his new toy.
(Sorry for the bad video quality - it was filmed using my handphone camera)
With playtime being another important aspect of a bunny's life, it is necessary to continually seek ways to keep your bunnies entertained at all times. There can actually be countless of ideas for DIY toys. As a head-start, you can find some ideas at
DIY Rabbit Toys.
Personally, I love the various ideas that have been suggested by the author. Apart from tubes, she has suggested ideas such as towels, phone books, boxes, cups and even caps. With the various ideas for DIY toys, you can 'pamper' your bunnies like kings and queens!
Do you have any other ideas for creating DIY toys? Feel free to share your ideas!

Playtime for Bunnies!
Monday, November 23, 2009

Contrary to the perception of bunnies being quiet and shy, they are actually playful, fun-loving pets. Just like a child, playtime is their favourite time of the day.
My two bunnies love it whenever I let them out to play. They enjoy jumping and running around from one point to another, sometimes even in circles. However, it might not be always possible to let them out to play for 24 hours a day. A bored bunny can also become a destructive bunny if they find the wrong things to chew.
How should you solve this problem?
Naturally, the simplest way is to get bunny toys. These are available at most pet stores in Singapore, usually in the form of a wooden carrot or corn-shaped toy. But again, bunny toys may lack variety. It is also not possible for you to buy everything due to cost considerations.
Hence, the term "do-it-yourself" arises. Apart from being inexpensive and convenient, you can also customise the toy when you create the toy yourself. One good example would be to
build a cardboard castle for your bunny. I particularly like this idea of using cardboards to build a castle for bunnies. Cardboard is easily available and customizable. Instead of a toy that is fixed according to universal standards, you can build a cardboard castle for your bunny the way you want it to be. Thumbs up for the good idea!

Bunny Basics: All about Food
Saturday, November 21, 2009

The most important part of a bunny’s life is its diet. This may sound simple, but it actually requires a deep understanding of the different types of food in order to ensure that you can provide your bunny with a well-balanced diet.
Now that I have said it, you might be asking, “What are the different types of bunny food?” Generally, bunny food includes hay, pellets, vegetables, and bunny treats. Speaking of which, bunny treats refer to fresh fruits, bunny biscuits and jellies.
A useful guide for bunny food is illustrated in the
Food Pyramid.

On top of the above-mentioned, how can you incorporate both food and entertainment to bunnies at the same time? Well, this can be done by using simple toys to contain the food. An example of this is
‘Roll in Hay’. As seen from the blog post, the owner had actually used simple toilet rolls to contain the hay. By doing so, bunnies can actually enjoy eating the hay and rolling it as a toy at the same time. Being low-cost and effective, I feel that this is a really good idea and i should try it on my bunnies too!
